The Railway Protection Force (RPF) also lodged a case against Kandhla’s Samajwadi Party MLA Nahid Hasan on charges of instigating a mob to damage railway property during Saturday’s clashes.
The local police, in one FIR, have named former chairman of the town area, Hazi Islam, and four others, along with 2,000 unknown people. In the other FIR, the police have registered a case against over 150 people on charges of vandalising a police station and setting vehicles on fire.
The clashes between protesters and police caused injuries to a protester and 16 police officers.
“Two cases have been lodged against the rioters and officials have been given instructions to identify and arrest those who instigated violence in the town,” said Alok Sharma, IG of Meerut zone, adding that the situation was now under control.
While police and officials were busy in dispersing the violent mob at Kandhla station, a mob of over 150 people vandalised Kandhal police station and torched many vehicles parked on its premises.
