The Samajwadi Party (SP) has raised the aspirations of voters by telling them that by electing Mulayam Singh Yadav as an MP from here they would be sending the next Prime Minister of the country.

"You made him MP in 1996 and he became the defence minister. This time you make him MP and he will become the next PM," say SP workers while urging the people to vote for Mulayam. Cassettes with songs projecting the Uttar Pradesh chief minister as the next PM are being distributed across the constituency.

Mulayam's main rival this time is Balram Singh Yadav of the BJP. Over the years, the region has witnessed the love-hate relationship between the two Yadavs. After sharing rooms and studying together at Etawah, both went on to defeat each other, turn by turn, in Vidhan Sabha polls.

Their rivalry notwithstanding, Mulayam had inducted Balram into the SP and fielded him from Mainpuri in 1998 and 1999. He even ensured that his political adversary-turned-friend won the seat. Although Balram was an SP Member of Parliament in the dissolved Lok Sabha, he fell out with Mulayam and joined the BJP recently.

The loser in these political games has been Mainpuri. There is no sign of this been a VVIP constituency and nobody forgets to mention the condition of the roads and other facilities in the main town areas.
