Talking to the HT Lucknow Live, Dr Goswami said he had introduced such classes during his tenure in other districts too. He believes, smart appearance and physical fitness enhanced proficiency. Policemen with bulging tummies only give the appearance of lax policing and the image of the district police gets maligned, he said.

Dr Goswami says he has suggested the cops go for the classes whenever they have time from their duty schedules. The classes would be held at regular intervals to make it possible for all to attend.

Besides, the SSP said, his prime concern was to make those policemen quit alcohol who had the habit of consuming it during duty hours. The classes have been made compulsory for such cops and their immediate officials would be asked to ensure that these policemen went to the Police Lines regularly.

Dr Goswami said the step was taken after a sub-inspector (S-I) recently was caught in an inebriated state while checking vehicles in the Aliganj area.

Though, the S-I was suspended, the incident slandered the image of the Lucknow police, he said. If the policemen followed the instruction as required, good results would follow, he said.
