Stage set for DDU convocation today

DEEN DAYAL Upadhyay Gorakhpur University authorities have completed all preparations for the 26th convocation on Friday. Chancellor and Governor TV Rajeswar will preside over the one-and-a half-hour-long programme. Noted scientist Prof AS Kolaskar will be the chief guest and Prof AN Ansari of the Aligarh Muslim University be the special guest on the occasion. Security has been tightened on and around the university premises. District officials visited the venue for an inspection.

Security has been tightened on and around the university premises. District officials visited the venue for an inspection. Seventeen members of the NSS and 50 NCC cadets will give a guard of honour to the guests. The Governor will arrive here at 10.30 am. He will also visit Aurangabad village on BRD Medical College Road. From there, he will go to Chauri Chaura to pay tribute to martyrs of the freedom struggle.

Programme coordinator Prof Babban Mishra said Prof Kolaskar was awarded the fellowship of the National Science Academy in 1994. He participated in various international workshops and seminars, besides being a life member of the Maharashtra Association of Cultivation of Science. He was awarded PARAM by the government for Development of Advanced Computing for Best Application Software on Parallel Computer. He is also a member of the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Terminology and Bio-Informatics. He is a member of various international scientific societies and bodies, including the Advisory Committee of Task Force on Bio-informatics.

Meanwhile, the university authorities on Thursday organised a programme and distributed 82 gold medals among 38 toppers of various departments of the year 2004. They also distributed 86 gold medals among 39 toppers of various disciplines for the year 2004-05.

Students were unhappy with the last-minute arrangement. They said they were denied an opportunity to receive an award from the Governor.

A Sanskrit student Kahkashan bagged nine gold medals and set a record.
