SPORTS AND Youth Welfare Department on Wednesday released its list of successful players and events conducted by the department in the past year.
According to sports director Sanjay Chaudhary team efforts of the department had made it possible to organise successful events over the past year. He said efforts of the department could be gauged from the fact that the budget had increased to Rs 24 crore from Rs 5 crore last year.
Highlighting the department’s achievements he said the department took innovative steps like opening of the National Sailing School at the Upper Lake, the first Women Hockey Academy in Gwalior, Tribal Talent Search Programme, sports encouragement programme for differently-abled children, Malkhamb Policy, Gramin Yuva Kendra, Cricket Talent Search, District Sports Training Centres and others. The Women Hockey Academy’s team scored 73 goals without conceding a single goal in the State-level tournament.
The department claimed this was the first time that such a number of activities had been organised. About players who had shown promise in national and international level, he said players like Shashwat Patel, Rajkumari Dodia, Amardeep Basediya and others made the State proud by winning medals at international events.
The department issued a list of 22 players who won medals in different international meets. It includes players like Kripa Shankar Patel (gold at Commonwealth Wrestling Championship), Rajkumari Dodia (gold in national shooting), Arundhati Kirkire (represented Indian women cricket team in the World Cup), Shashwat Patel (gold in international gymnastic championship), Aishwarya (gold in Asian table tennis championship).
The department also claimed for the first time a number of international meets were organised in the recent past, which included the National Billiards Championship, National Snooker Championship, National Kayaking and Canoeing Championship and others.
International meets to be organised later this year include the South Asian Sailing Championship and National Rowing Championship.
The Sports Department won three gold medals in the National Youth Festival that was organised in Bihar from February 12.
