The new district was to be named Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Nagar after the Dalit icon and grandson of Maratha king Shivaji. Amethi and Rae Bareli are the Lok Sabha constituencies of Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi and party chief Sonia Gandhi, respectively.
The bench observed that creation of a district was a big event and could not be done in a haste, overlooking or underestimating the requirement of providing necessary infrastructure.
