Two months ago, the young Durham tyro was a million miles away from the one-day squad.

Injuries, poor form and hey presto, the one-day call came halfway through England's troubled tour Down Under.

He impressed the management on and off the pitch, was drafted in - despite his limited one-day experience at county level - and performed admirably.

Harmison is a broad-shouldered pace bowler reminiscent of yesteryear.

He may prove expensive at times but Nasser Hussain will be looking to him to take wickets while someone else keeps a check on the run rate.

The pacy South African wickets will be suited to Harmison's style and he will be sure to cause batsmen alarm - as long as he keeps a check on his tendency to bowl wides.
