THE STATE Congress on Sunday criticised the elite Special Task Force (STF) of the UP police for allegedly turning into a ‘Samajwadi Task Force’ to serve the interest of the ruling SP.
The Congress said the STF that had brought laurels to the State through its excellent performance sullied its image.
Talking to newsman, UPCC spokesman Akhilesh Pratap said the STF had lost its sheen because of its misuse for political purpose. Even senior police officers were not happy with the STF activities, he added.
While the STF theory about the rescue operation of the three-year-old boy Anant Gupta was blown to pieces, in the past the STF-led so-called encounter of dreaded Chambal dacoit Nirbahy Gujjar had also raised several questions, he added.
The Congress leader said during the last three years, the STF had not only been politicised but had also been providing protection to Mafiosi close to the government.
Singh said owing to deterioration in the law and order situation, he people lost their faith in the STF. Singh said the STF role was exposed after the murder of BJP MLA Krishnanand Rai, kidnapping of Anant and the phone- tapping incident of an SP leader. Singh alleged that the State Government had driven away the STF from its basic responsibilities.
Singh said a large number of MLAs and ministers were facing criminal charges and the High Court had directed the State Government to take action against those criminals. However, the State Government, instead of controlling rising incidents of crime, had been protecting the criminals.
