Stray clashes mar ?Ganesh visarjan?

AT THE end of ten-day long Ganesh Chaturthi festivities, ?Ganesh visarjan? was performed with traditional fervor and gaiety, marred by violent conflicts among the devotees. Several persons were injured in such stray clashes and the cops had a tough time to tackle the situation. Over a two-dozen of processions were taken out from localities all over the city here on Wednesday. The devotees carried the idols of Lord Ganesh on trucks crowded with devotees and headed towards the river Ganga for immersion.

Over a two-dozen of processions were taken out from localities all over the city here on Wednesday. The devotees carried the idols of Lord Ganesh on trucks crowded with devotees and headed towards the river Ganga for immersion.

Hundreds of devotees followed the procession dancing on drumbeats.

The biggest procession was taken out from Ram Narayan Bazar. Despite the communal tension on Tuesday night, the enthusiasm of devotees was at a high pitch and they took out the immersion procession in the evening. Hundreds of local residents including women and children of Birhana Road took part in the procession.

Another procession was taken out from P Road. Large number of devotees joined the procession and reached the banks of river Ganga in procession. The BNSD Shiksha Niketan also celebrated a ten-day festival. A procession was also taken out from the school to mark the end of festivities. Principal of the college Angad Singh performed all rituals and all students of the school along with the entire staff were also present on the occasion.

At Lathi Mohal, a pitcher hitting (matki phod) function was also organised. The winning team was awarded a cash prize of Rs 1101 by the festival organisers.

Several such processions were also taken out from Arya Nagar, Govind Nagar, Kiwdai Nagar, Saket Nagar, Parmat and other localities. AT Lal Imli crossing, two groups of devotees came across and exchanged blows, causing a stampede.

Three persons suffered head injuries in the process.

Hundreds of devotees squatted on the road at Deputy Ka Parao on a trivial issue of whose procession will go ahead of others. Circle officer Manoj Awasthi reached the site with heavy police contingent and sorted out the issue. There were reports of clashes from Chakeri and Shivala.
