A section of students of Allahabad University on Saturday blocked the Thornhill Road at Hindu Hostel crossing here in support of their demand for holding of Allahabad University Students Union elections and also to oppose the age limit set for contesting polls by the Lyngdoh Committee. The students also handed over a memorandum, addressed to the HRD Minister, to the Additional City Magistrate and later gheraoed the Allahabad University proctor demanding him to declare the date of students union election.
A section of students of Allahabad University on Saturday blocked the Thornhill Road at Hindu Hostel crossing here in support of their demand for holding of Allahabad University Students Union (AUSU) elections and also to oppose the age limit set for contesting polls by the Lyngdoh Committee.
The students also handed over a memorandum, addressed to the HRD Minister, to the Additional City Magistrate (ACM) and later gheraoed the Allahabad University proctor demanding him to declare the date of students union election.
A large number of students led by student leader Rajesh Singh, Abhishek Shukla and AU students union general secretary Suresh Yadav assembled at the Hindu Hostel crossing and blocked the road disturbing the traffic for hours.
The students cleared the blockade after Additional City Magistrate accepted their memorandum addressed to the HRD Minister.
The students reached the proctor's office and raised slogans demanding declaration of student's union election date.
Rajesh Singh held a meeting with AU Vice-Chancellor Prof Rajen Harshe and claimed that the Vice-Chancellor has assured to hold a meeting in this regard immediately after the Dussehra holidays while the proctor assured to prepare the voters list.
During his meeting with the VC, Rajesh Singh mentioned that the interim orders given by the Supreme Court were related to Kerala and not a compulsion for AU. Student leader while addressing the students during the protest threatened to hold intense demonstration if the authorities failed to declare students union election within 20 hours.
Yadav demanded to set the age limit for Vidhan Sabha, Municipal Corporation and Panchayat elections while Surendra Chaudhari, Vijay Dwivedi demanded to set a limit of Rs 50,000 for the expenses for contesting the Vidhan Sabha and Lok Sabha elections and restriction on the criminals from contesting the elections.
