A GROUP of Allahabad University (AU) students led by Anand Kumar Singh on Saturday gheraoed the Dean (Science) and forced closure of the zoology department.
They were protesting against the delay in admission to the Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technique (DMLT) course being run by the department.
The students first held a meeting at the union hall and accused the zoology department head Prof Pratima Gaur and dean (science) Prof Hari Prakash of trying to stop the course by raising questions on its validity and approval.
Addressing the students, Anand Singh said that the committee formed under Prof AK Gupta by the AU VC to look into the approval of the course had submitted a favourable report. After this, AU V-C Prof Rajen Harshe has given clear instructions to re-start the course on August 10, 2006.
Singh claimed that despite the V-C’s instructions, the head of the zoology department was delaying admission to the course. After the meeting, the students took out a procession and gheraoed the dean (Science). Later, they reached the zoology department and on finding Prof Gaur absent from her seat, they forced closure of the department offices and the classrooms.
They also raised slogans against the head. They said that if the inquiry committee report were not made public, they would intensify the agitation.
Students gherao police station
ISHWAR SHARAN Degree College (ISDC) students gheraoed the Colonelganj police station on Saturday and demanded action against students union president Vishal Shukla.
The agitators accused Shukla of beating up a student of the college and shouted slogans against Shukla.
Meanwhile, Shukla denied the charges and said that he had been receiving threats from some unidentified persons asking him to stop protest against the college authorities.
He said that the allegations were baseless and this was an attempt to tarnish his image.
