STUDENTS OF the IIT-K, the GSVM Medical College and other city colleges took out a candlelight procession from Gol Chauraha to Coca Cola Crossing this evening to mobilise support of people against the OBC Reservation Bill.

It was a silent rally, which aimed at seeking support of the people in their attempt to oppose OBC quota in the professional institutes. The Centre has proposed to introduce the Bill in Parliament in the monsoon session.

Many girl medicos and college students joined the candle march. Some of them were also carrying placards bearing anti-reservation slogans.

Forum of Indians against Reservation (FIR) coordinator Omendra Pratap Singh told HT that the procession was one of several such programs which aimed at regaining the enthusiasm among students and local citizens on the reservation issue’ He said FIR had proposed several such agitation programmes to be held before going to Delhi on July 24 to gherao Parliament.

He said about 50 students from the IIT-K were expected to go to Delhi to participate in the gherao. Besides, students from the medical colleges and the IITs from other parts of the country would join the gherao.

He said so far over 17,000 people had participated in the “One Rupee, One Sign’ drive till date.

The drive was still in progress. He, however, said they were not getting desired support from people in all their actions.
