Students urged to do more for nation

He made these remarks while garlanding the statue of Lal Padmdhar who attained martyrdom on August 12, 1942 near the AU student union hall. Prof Harshe also said that the varsity should contribute more to the nation.
Lal Padmdhar, who was a student of BA-I of the university, was shot dead by the British police when the students were trying to out a procession against the British regime.
The cops led by the then district magistrate tried to stop the procession at the collectorate and ordered the students to disperse. When the students did not obey the orders, the DM asked the cops to open fire.
The procession was led by the women students of the university and when Lal Padmdhar saw that the cops were ready to fire, he moved towards the forefront of the procession.
As a result, he sustained gun shot injuries and died on the spot. His sacrifice drove thousands to raise their voice against the British rule.
Speaking on the occasion, a member of the AU Executive Council Hriday Narayan Malhotra said that the sacrifice of Lal Padmdhar should be a guiding force for the present and future generation of students of the varsity. He appealed to the AU VC to move the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) for granting a chair in the name of Shaheed Lal Padmdhar.
Meanwhile, the students and educational institutions celebrated the Martyrdom Day of Lal Padamdhar. The Allahabad University (AU) Students Union (AUU) activists took out a procession from the union hall to the district court and held a meeting to pay tributes to the martys.
Speaking on the occasion, Yadav said that the students should take inspiration from Padamdhar. Conducting the meeting AUU vice-president Brijendra Mishra said that the students followed the customs to remember the martyrdom and this would continue in future, too. Yadav urged the administration to develop and beautify the spot where Padamdhar sacrificed his life. Meanwhile, Ministerial and Technical Staff Union (MTSU) members organised a symposium on ‘The Role of the Allahabad University in Freedom Movement. Former AU president Anugrah Narayan Singh was the chief guest and MTSU president Akhilesh Srivastava presided over the symposium.
Speaking on the occasion Singh said that the country attained freedom due to sacrifices made by the freedom fighters.
Srivastava highlighted the role of AU in the freedom movement and said that the welcome function hosted for Prince of Wales was disrupted by the AU students and the entire city revolted after the sacrifice of Lal Padamdhar at the district court.
Symposium: The Indian Justice Party (IJP) and the Pratiyogi Chatra Morcha (PCM) will organise a symposium on ‘The Role of Youth in Politics’ in the AUU hall at 11 am on August 13.
The student leaders will debate on issues related to student welfare and chalk out a strategy to protest against the State Government.
