Stung minister Mehboob Ali resigns

CAUGHT IN a drug trafficking controversy, following a sting operation carried out against him and two other MLAs, Minister of State for Backward Classes Welfare Mehboob Ali today announced his resignation from his ministerial post.

Talking to Hindustan Times on telephone, the minister said he would not like to continue on his post till his name was cleared. “I am sure my name would be cleared after inquiry,” said Mehboob Ali adding he was a man of self-respect. Ali said he had sent his resignation to Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav. He said the CM had been kind to him. Ali announced his resignation while addressing a public meeting at Amroha.

His resignation came on a day when the Vidhan Sabha issued a notification constituting an 11-member committee to probe charges against the stung MLAs.

Officials refused to comment on Ali’s resignation. However, sources said his resignation was an outcome of growing public pressure on him over the issue.
