A decommissioned diesel-powered submarine sank near the coast of Russia's Far Eastern Kamchatka peninsula, rescuers said early on Tuesday, adding that no one was hurt in the incident.

"The incident's reasons are as yet unclear, but one version is insufficient sealing of the sub, which allowed seawater in," the rescue centre's spokesman said.
The submarine was decommissioned in 2003 and sold to a private company for scrapping. It was then sold to a Chinese firm and was due to be towed to an unspecified Chinese port.
