THE CITY is in for a Sufi treat, thanks to of Sufi singers from Pakistan, UP Sangeet Natak Akademi and Indian Council for Cultural Research (ICCR).

Together they are going to present a Sufi Utsav in Lucknow on June 21 and June 22. Pakistani Sufi group led by Mazhar Umrao Bundu Khan (grandson of Ustad Bundu Khan) and Bharti Bandhu, a quintet famous for their recital of Kabir dohas will perform in the utsav.

The venue for this Sufi Utsav will be the picturesque UPSNA grounds in Gomti Nagar. It seems thatthe city is developing a taste for Sufi music. When Shye Ben-Tzur from Israel performed at Genesis Club some time back he managed to pull quite a crowd. Similarly, Manjari Chaturvedi’s Sufi Kathak and Rekha Bharadwaj’s music performance in Taj recently was quite appreciated and talked about by the people.

In this Utsav, Mazhar Umrao Bundu Khan will perform on June 21, along with his group comprising of five members. Mazhar is quite known for his quawwali-style rendition.

On June 22, Bharti Bandhu will mesmerize the audience with his soul stirring recitation of Kabir dohas and bhajans. When Bharti Bandhu had last performed in Lucknow their performance was quite appreciated by the people. Bharti Bandhu is a quintet: Swami GCD Bharti, Swami Vivekanand Bharti, G Anadi Ishwar Bharti, G Satyanand Bharti and G Ramanand Bharti. They have inherited their style from their family.
