Ramdev has been touring Britain and holding yoga workshops as part of his fund-raising campaign for his yoga institute in India. Last week, thousands of people visited the Kodak social club in Harrow View, North Harrow, to attend his twice- daily sessions.

He was welcomed by the Mayor, Councillor Janet Cowan, and Councillor Anjana Patel, portfolio holder for community equality, to a reception at the Civic Centre.

Councillor Patel said: "Whenever we hear of new treatments from a country like India we all think it is mumbo-jumbo from the east. Until 50 years ago people said the same about yoga, but now it has become accepted by everyone.

"Millions of people have found a lasting cure by following the way Swami Ramdev is showing us."

Ramdev was presented with a plate and given a brief history of the borough.

He said: "Yoga is not just physical exercise but a complete medical science, it is a way of life and the art of living. Breathing exercises can cure many problems.

"Regular practise of pranayam yogic breathing helps to cure asthma, heart problems, depression, Parkinson's disease and many more ailments."
