Debates have raged on striking a balance between T20s and the traditional format, but it takes the wisdom of Sachin Tendulkar to settle the discussion.
Stressing on the need to create space for these formats, where both can complement each other, Tendulkar said, “If you see across the world, most of the Test matches, they have results, very few Tests are drawn nowadays and that is due to the introduction of T20 as well. They are complementing each other.
“If you want more guys to follow cricket, T20 is an ideal format to introduce people to cricket. Then, gradually go on to one-day cricket and Test cricket.”
Tendulkar was speaking at the ESPNcricinfo awards night after being voted cricketer of the generation on Friday.
But the need to give Test cricket primacy was stressed upon, and the suggestions were convincing.
“The ICC should take note and organise more Test matches if it wants Test cricket to survive. (However), I still believe Test cricket is in good hands, players are producing unbelievable cricket. Test cricket is the ultimate challenge,” said Tendulkar.
“In Tests, you require planning, vision and execution. It doesn’t happen that much in T20 cricket. You can face three balls and get back to the pavilion as a hero. It doesn’t happen in any other format.”
Like it or leave it, Tendulkar said the love for the longer format shouldn’t be enforced, rather it be left to one’s passion for Test cricket.
“You can’t force someone to like Test cricket or be passionate about it. If it doesn’t exist in some individual, you should not force him, leave him, and let him play one-day and T20 cricket.”
