Bangladesh's new young pacer saw his one-day debut in the home series against Pakistan.

In the very first match, he showed some promise returning with the miserly figures of 10-1-19-3, which included the key wicket of Inzamam-ul-Haq. His subsequent outings in the series were patchy at best.

He didn't get much more play for Bangladesh except for a forgettable two-game stint at the TVS Cup in Dhaka (April, 2003). With Bangladesh's main strike pacer Mashrafee back from injury, he again sat on the sidelines until 2004.

With Mashrafee injured again and the need for a some pace, Tareq was chosen to tour Zimbabwe and immediately paid back the selectors' faith in him.

He was instrumental in Bangladesh's first One-Day International win in 5 years in the third game at Harare.
