The Tehri hydel project will start generating electricity by June 15 this year, Union Power Secretary RB Sahi said on Sunday.
"If everything goes right, we will start getting power from Tehri by June 15," Sahi, who visited the dam site to inspect the progress of the project, told reporters.
The first unit of the project, which is being built at a cost of Rs 7,000 crore, would produce 250 MW of power with the dam authorities already testing the turbine in this regard.
This follows an increase in the inflow of Bhagirathi river waters which is presently hovering at around 740 metre above sea level at the Tehri dam reservoir.
Along with Sahi, Uttaranchal principal secretary power N Ravishanker and head of the Tehri Hydro Development Corporation (THDC) RK Sharma were also present. Uttaranchal would get 12 per cent of the electricity from Tehri free of cost.
The preparations for starting the 250 MW second unit are also in final stages.
"By July 15, we are expecting another 250 MW that will take the total production from the project to 500 MW," Sahi said.
He also added that by the end of this year, the Tehri project would generate nearly 1,000 MW of power.
