Israel’s attack on innocent Lebanese civilians will fail to end terrorism. Instead, it will incite the survivors to seek revenge. Many have seen their homes and families wiped off, and may not hesitate to take drastic action in desperation. It will simply lead to more terrorism.

Check beggar mafia

It was shocking to read about the business of maiming people at the behest of the ‘beggar mafia’ (July 31). While the three doctors should be given the severest of punishment and barred from practising, this matter should be referred to the CBI to bring the kingpins to book.

No mole

Jaswant Singh’s allegations regarding a ‘mole’ have turned out to be entirely false. The government should proceed against him to set an example.

Biased argument

Apropos of Prem Shankar Jha’s article Bidding peace goodbye (July 28), peace initiatives must be based on ground realities. It is bizarre to expect India to continue with the peace process despite gruesome terror attacks aimed at crippling tourism in Jammu and Kashmir and damaging Mumbai’s economy.

Jha laments that the peace talks with Pakistan have broken down because of India’s adverse reaction to terrorist attacks on its soil. During all these peace talks with Pakistan, what India has got in return is only terrorism. The argument that Pakistan’s nuclear bomb should force India to tolerate its mischief holds no water.

Encroaching public space

The report Delhi is hardly a pedestrians’ city (July 28) should alert our politicians and city planners. The encroachment of pedestrian paths is almost complete, and in some areas shopkeepers have not only occupied the entire pedestrian space but also part of the road. The civic bodies and the police are concerned only about collecting hafta and political parties are busy infighting.
