The additional dead were all reported on the tourist resort island of Phuket, the ministry's disaster management unit said in its daily update.

Officials at the ministry said two of the newly discovered victims were Thai while 17 were unidentified. No other details were given.

The number of foreigners confirmed dead was 1,789 while the number of Thais rose to 1,779, as did the number of people of unknown national origin to 1,805.

The number of Thais reported missing also rose by 26 to 2,131, while the number of missing foreigners remained unchanged at 1,010.
