won the Oscar for best foreign language film on Sunday, the first time a Canadian film has won the award.

The Oscars are the U.S. film industry's highest honors and are given out each year by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Los Angeles.

The Barbarian Invasions is about the delicate relationship between a father and son. When Rémy Girard, a professor in history and an idealist, learns that he is dying, his ex-wife summons their son, Sébastien.

His career as a successful stock trader has meant that the rift between him and his socialist father is deep. In an effort to ease Rémy's last days, Sébastien gathers together a group of his father's oldest friends.
