Since 1930, the FIFA World Cup has fascinated millions over the world. More than eight decades on, it still does.
Of course we love the NBA, the tennis grand slams, NASCAR, cricket, F1 and sport in general, but football is a league apart — like way, way apart.
There is something about this game; the fervour, the passion, the unruliness, the techniques, the pace, the time, the hits, the misses, the legends, the ooohhhh it-hit-the-bar moments, the stories, the noise, the 30 seconds left and he’s got the ball… go, go go… yesssss! And then, the captivating beauty.
The World Cup takes some waiting. It is, however, worth the while. When it comes, oh boy it does with the rush of adrenaline.
The World Cup in our part of the world is always on late at night. Growing up, the event for me always meant four to 104-year olds being more animated than usual, while the kettle brewed sweet, flavoured tea.
World Cup is when the streets are full of excitement; a time of colourful flags and walls painted blue, green and yellow. This is also the time when techniques are discussed, stories shared and forecasts made.
These days, apart from the tea being replaced by beer, it is still the same old sense of anticipation and footballing spirit that is in the air. The beautiful game is here again.
