The Delhi High Court decriminalised same sex relationships in India on July 2, 2009. A group of 80 - 100 people from the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community gathered at India Gate on Sunday evening to mark the day by holding a candle light march.

“The violence against our community has decreased,” said Abhina Aher, programme manager for Pehchan, which organised the march. “We couldn’t have conducted this march peacefully five years ago,” said Poonam, a member of the LGBT community. “Though the tolerance levels towards our community has increased, people are still homophobic,” said Hillol Dutta, another member of the community.
