The worst & best dressed divas

A surprise nomination for summer sizzler this year is Neha Dhupia. She needs to be congratulated for being in her clothes rather than out of them (remember Julie?). Whether in a bust flattering Suneet Varma dress and recently at the completion party of Chupke Chupke when she wore a vintage dull green and beige piece by Varun Bahl, she's showing her background as a model.
Another name that cropped up was Preity Zinta. She has added maturity and formality to her wardrobe anything to do with being Ness Wadia's girlfriend? - wearing a flattering kneelength Surily Goel piece for the designer's fashion week show to bubbly and youthful Fendi and Louis Vuitton dresses on the Cannes red-carpet. She's dimply, but this girl is dressing to make a sophisticated statement. She succeeds because, like a true sophisticate, she never over-does it.
But getting the most votes is Dia Mirza. Not only has she lost weight this season, there has been a quantum change in her wardrobe since she hosted the Screen awards earlier this year in an overtly sequined high neck top. The actress who began the summer in a chic gown by an exotic sounding Australian label at the fashion week soon swung to the Indian designers. Even as wardrobe after wardrobe crumbled around, Mirza held her own at the Fling vodka bash when she combined a black halter neck with a skirt that looked like a Shantanu-Nikhil Goenka. What firmly put her in the seat as style diva was the F awards do where she wore a Suneet Varma piece and changed soon after into a sequined Manish Malhotra evening dress. At the V Goddess party last week she wore a beige below-the-knee-skirt with dori work on the hems, standing out in a sea of halter-necks. Style watchers cannot remember one style slip by Dia this summer. Says stylist Anaita Shroff: "Dia is definitely coming into her own, showing off a new fashion persona. And she's not letting her dress overshadow her." I f it wasn't for Udita Goswami - who for some reason seems to have gone from her usual teasy mini-skirted look last season to OTT - we may well have called it the duel of the Duttas for the position of summer's worst dressed.
Udita managed to redeem herself somewhat, despite the `I dream of Genie' look that she was caught in at a recent awards night, with a midnight-blue empire line chiffon dress she wore to the launch of Atria mall late last week. Unfortunately that was more than what can be said of Tanushree Dutta. The Miss India, who seems bent on unflattering out fits, outdid herself with a frightful pair of glass es, denims and a rasta black top at the Star Sabse Favourite Kaun award. At the Mirchi Kaan awards, she had proved herself to be a contender for the worst dressed position for an unflattering dull print ed empire-line dress. The problem was not that it was so cleavy, but that it was unflattering ly so - it put the stretch marks on display. At the F awards, in what can only be called a move to cut down on her laun dry bill, she was decked up like a Christmas tree in the dress she was to perform in a horrid 3D effect body suit with cut away waist.
But the girl who - de spite all the magnani mous fashion faux pas of the season - manages to take the crown home is Lara Dutta. While she began the year in a con servative black chiffon dress for the Zinda fash ion show, signs for things to come were on show as early as last year when she wore a sequined see-through kurti at the police night func tion. She won the awards hands down, at the F award show for not only dressing up in a mini-skirt dress that looks like it was owned by a Bulgarian chamber-maid in a previous birth, but also for a pair of just-below-the knee leather boots when everyone else was wearing moccasins. And, what do the stylists have to say about this? "Leather boots in summer? It's common sense that there's going to be one hell of a stink when you take them off," says a style expert on condition of anonymity.
THE LABEL WEARER AWARD
The award goes to label lover Urmilla Matondkar who trumped the Max Mara wearing Katrina Kaif for showing off all through this summer dresses from the latest collection of labels like Dries Van Noten, and labels Louis Vuitton purses and Bvlgari jewellery.
MAIN MOSS BANNA CHAHTI HOON
She wins for emulating the just-out-of bed Kate Moss look. The make-up is all gone -Ameesha has been saying that that it's a conscious attempt for her to de-glam herself. She's also been peddling the `waist-coat' look Moss made famous.
THE 'I AM MY OWN PERSON' AWARD
She wore Sabyasachi at the fashion week and Manish Malhotra at an awards do. She may wear designer, but she gives it her own touch. For the Star awards she has on a desi designer top, paired with grey denims. At the F awards a Manish top was worn on denim pants.
