University sources said locks of two rooms, including of the audit section on the first floor of the central office, were found broken early Saturday morning by employees.

A complaint was filed with the police in this regard after discovering the incident, which was believed to have taken place last night.

SDPO, Bolpur, Prasanta Chowdhury, said that "after being informed by the university authority, our officers started a preliminary probe. We will interrogate the concerned employees of the university."

Senior varsity official Sabujkali Sen said "we are yet to assess the loss."

The incident followed the theft of Rabindranath Tagore's Nobel medallion in March 2004 which triggered a furore but even a CBI probe failed to yield any breakthrough.
