"There was dense fog over the region since Sunday evening and it has affected the visibility level on the roads. It is caused by the western disturbances that have increased the moisture levels in the atmosphere of the northern planes," Chatar Singh Malik, director of the meteorological department at Chandigarh, told IANS.

"There has been a substantial decline in both the night and day temperatures, but this is quite normal. The lowest temperature in Punjab was recorded in Amritsar district at 2 degrees Celsius Monday morning. It was 6.2 degrees Celsius in Chandigarh," said Malik.

The foggy weather conditions hit road, rail and air traffic. Many long distance trains coming from Delhi were delayed by four to five hours. Arrivals and departures of various flights were also delayed due to the dense fog and overcast weather conditions.

"There is a possibility of rain in the region and heavy snowfall in Himachal Pradesh in the next couple of days," Malik said.
