Three persons died and several others were injured, some of them seriously in a cyclone in Meghalaya's West Khasi Hills district in the wee hours on Tuesday.

The cyclone hit the district town Nongstoin at 1.30 am killing three persons at Mawkhawniaw village and caused extensive damage to electric supply, communication lines, government offices and quarters, private properties and the civil hospital, official sources said in Shillong.
A hailstorm also hit the area at noon which uprooted trees obstructing roads at some places.
Initial assessment put the loss at more than Rs 5 crore, the sources said.
Immediate relief was sent to the affected families and the civil administration began relief and assessment operation.
State home minister HDR Lyngdoh would visit Nongstoin on Tuesday to assess the damage caused by the cyclone.
