Situated at a prime spot opposite Mahim station, Grub Shup has got itself a great location. But as we entered, we were greeted with a whiff of musty air that was attempting to escape the unventilated space. The decor gave us a feeling that too many people had too many inputs to provide for this joint. A formal seating arrangement (chairs with upright backrests were uncomfortable) has been paired with cafe-style black-and-white chequered flooring.
We visited in the evening mid-week, and we were the only guests there. As a result, we became the centre of the staff’s attention — their passive scrutiny made the dining experience rather uneasy. We first ordered the Chorizo Pao (Rs 90). Even though our expectations were at an all-time low, it still disappointed. The pork pieces scattered in between the pao weren’t flavourful and were slathered in a boring gravy.
The next item, a BLT (bacon, lettuce and tomato) sandwich (Rs 80) was recommended to us. Once it arrived, it seemed like it was prepared by an amateur cook. The tomato slices were unevenly sliced, the bacon was chewy, and the wafers, pliant.
The Kairy Panna (Rs 30), which the manager hard sold to us as a refreshing drink, was also a disaster. It didn’t taste fresh and carried a strong artificial flavour. The Curb Side Chicken Burger (Rs 90) was average; the patty could have used a little more spice.
We wrapped up the unsatisfying meal with the Garlic Chicken Parantha (Rs 100), which despite its undercooked doughy wrap, was better than all the other dishes we tried. Grub Shup doesn’t take the job of providing quality food too seriously. We don’t see ourselves coming back for more.
