Animals are such agreeable friends – they ask no questions, they pass no criticisms. These words by George Eliot mean a lot especially today as the human civilisation celebrates World Animal Day.
This is a special day reserved for the animal community to celebrate their existence in all forms – vertebrates, invertebrates, reptiles, aerial, arboreal, amphibians and the ones inside the water.
October 4 is just not a mere date, it is also a recognition of the diverse roles the creatures play in our lives, the numerous ways in which animals complete life on our green planet. This date was originally chosen because it is the feast day of Francis of Assisi, a nature lover and patron saint of animals and the environment.
Today, the event has gone beyond the celebration of a saint. Now, animal welfare groups, sanctuaries and individuals throughout the world hold special events to heighten public awareness regarding animal issues and to encourage people to think about how we, as humans, relate to animals.
