Punjab added 16 runs to their overnight total to fall for a modest 228. Tamil Nadu responded strongly with openers Murali Vijay and Abhinav Mukund stitching together a 154-run partnership for the first wicket.
Punjab though tried to fight back in the last hour when they picked up five wickets, but the damage had already been done.
Both Vijay and Mukund played aggressively, and made Punjab toil. Vijay, in particular, was in a punishing mood, hitting 16 boundaries and three sixes.
