Former Union Minister for Environment and Forests, Baalu has the distinction of working with two Prime Ministers, first with Deve Gowda and then with Vajpayee.

DMK leader TR Baalu has the rare distinction of being inthree cabinets, none of which were DMK-led.

Elected to the 11th Lok Sabha, Baalu was Union Minister of State, Petroleum and Natural Gas and Non-Conventional Energy Sources between 1996-98, first under HD Deve Gowda government and then in the Vajpayee cabinet.

He was re-elected to the 12th Lok Sabha in 1998 and re-elected yet again in 1999 to the 13th Lok Sabha for a third term. Prior to DMK pulling out of the NDA alliance, he served as Union Minister for Environment and Forests.

His stint as a politician began in 1986 when he was nominated as Rajya Sabha member.
