The benchmark Sensex ended more than 155 points, or 1.13 per cent, higher on the Bombay Stock Exchange on the first session of year on Tuesday on widespread buying by foreign and domestic funds.

The 30-share index, Sensex, which fell by over 59 points in the previous session, bounced back to close 155.33 points higher at 13,942.24 after hitting the day's high of 13,980.54.
Similarly, the wide-based National Stock Exchange index, Nifty, crossed 4,000 points mark to close 41.00 points higher at 4,007.40 after touching a high of 4,016.65.
Market observers said strong auto sale numbers posted by auto majors, firming trends at other Asian markets buoyed the trading sentiments.
