PROTESTING AGAINST the Union Government’s decision on airports, various trade unions staged a fierce demonstration in the City today.
The trade union leaders stated the Government’s decision to handover Mumbai and Delhi airports in private hands was a threat to national security. They also criticised the lathi-charge on protestors and airport employees and said it was a national shame.
The demonstration was staged by CITU, AITUC, AIBEA, AIBOA, Insurance union, trade unions of Union and State Governments, medical representatives association and several others.
Meanwhile, the strike by Raja Bhoj airport employees against the privatisation of airports continued in Bairagarh here on Thursday. Except air traffic control services (ATC), employees of other department did not report for duty. Morning flights, however, were on time while Indian Airlines evening flights were slightly delayed.
Employees under the banner of AII Authority Employees’ Joint Forum shouted slogans against the UPA Government and disrupted work on Thursday. Army jawans were deputed at the airport to take care of fire services.
Joint Forum president Balraj Singh addressing employees said efforts were being made to suppress employees campaign in Delhi and Mumbai but thousands of employees had shown their unity against the move. Work at all the airports was affected adversely, he added. Management, however, claimed all services at the airport were normal and passengers did not face any inconvenience.
