Though no formal confirmation of the decision was forthcoming till the filing of this report, sources said the vice chancellor remained busy with the AU finance officer, chalking out finer points of the move till late Thursday evening. The decision could be announced by the VC at the function to commemorate the completion of one year of the varsity (re)attaining the Central status on Friday.

If implemented, the move will prove beneficial for two dozen teachers of AU and its constituent colleges who were retiring this year.

It is to be noted that nine members of the executive council, the apex decision-making body of the varsity, led by Sunit Vyas, had written to the V-C, requesting him to grant one-year extension to these teachers and their cases to be put before the EC members at their next meeting for being considered for re-employment.

Chances of re-employment of retired teachers have opened up following the UGC recommending the same to deal with acute shortage of teachers in institutions of higher education, including central varsities.

Although the decision was yet to be announced, teachers of the varsity and its constituent colleges seemed overjoyed.

Allahabad University Constituent Colleges Teachers Association (AUCUTA) president Dr Ram Muni Pandey praised and thanked AU Vice-Chancellor Prof RG Harshe for his positive approach in the matter. AUCUTA had been consistently trying for extension of services of the teachers from 62 to 65 years. Dr Pandey said the State government had already issued an order for extending the services of university and degree college teachers.

HRD secretary had sent letters to the secretaries of all state governments and the UGC had also responded positively to the matter.

Dr Pandey said the GO from the HRD ministry in this regard was expected to reach here very soon.
