UGC team happy with progress
THE UNIVERSITY Grants Commission (UGC) delegation headed by Prof S Xavier Alponse from Chennai began the inspection of the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT-A) here on Wednesday and reviewed the progress achieved by the institution during the past five years.
THE UNIVERSITY Grants Commission (UGC) delegation headed by Prof S Xavier Alponse from Chennai began the inspection of the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT-A) here on Wednesday and reviewed the progress achieved by the institution during the past five years.

The delegation reached IIIT-A on Tuesday evening after taking a stock at Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Information Technology at Amethi.
The team, comprising Dr DR Bhashkar, Head of the Department of Electronics at Jamila Milia Islamia (New Delhi), Prof Yogesh Singh, Dean, the University School of Information Technology of the Guru Govind Singh IP University (Delhi), MM Rastogi and Manoj Bhasin talked to faculty members, officers and staff regarding the future growth and plans of the IIIT-A. Prof Om Vikas, Director of IIIT-Gwalior was also present on the occasion.
The members were impressed with the stupendous progress attained by the institute in a short span of seven years since its inception.
Prof S Xavier Alponse, after considering all points and suggestions, laid emphasis on research areas, scholarship to needy students, more international collaborations and fulfilment to societal needs through available technologies.
He appreciated establishing of Village Resource Centre in Amethi and said that such efforts should continue at the local level. He gave an example of the work being carried out by Vishwanath in South India where he is involving local people in his institution.
He congratulated the IIIT-A Director and his team for putting this institution on national as well on the international map.
IIIT-A Director, Dr MD Tiwari presenting his report on concept, planning and growth of the institute said it had a mission to be a global centre of excellence in IT education, research and technology development. He said the institute was ranked 11th among country's top technical institutions in a survey conducted by Data Quest this year. "Chairman of our Board of Governor has given a call to us to secure the 8th rank in next year's survey of top technical institutions in the country," said the Director. He apprised the UGC team of the several scholarship schemes, patents, copyrights, international collaborations with more than two dozen universities, job placements, research works being carried out at the Institute among others.
Prof US Tiwari, Dean, also presented a report on various academic activities at the institute. The institute, which was started seven years back with 30 BTech students, has 1000 students in BTech and M Tech today. Several new courses like MBA, Cyber Law and BTech Electronics have been introduced and nearly two dozen research projects, including some in collaboration with institutions of Canada, Australia, US, Korea, Russia, Switzerland, France and ASEAN countries are also underway.
Later, the UGC team visited the Robotics Lab, Electronics, Forensic lab, library, server room, studio, computer fabrication unit, MBA division, Universal Digital Lab, IIIT-ISRO-VRC project, IRCB etc.
The UGC members also took a stock of new construction work, hostels, residences and other construction works.
It is worth mentioning that the team is visiting here to review the deemed university status after completion of five years of the institute. According to Section 3 of UGC, status of deemed university is reviewed after a gap of five years.
