A local court on Wednesday granted bail to expelled BJP leader Uma Bharti in a defamation case filed against her by a newspaper group.
Chief Judicial Magistrate Anil Gupta granted bail to Bharti on a personal bond of Rs 3,000 in the case filed against her for allegedly making statements linking the group with a scam.
"Though the case was scheduled for hearing on April 24, we sought an urgent hearing today as Uma Bharti would not have been able to appear before the court on the scheduled date," Bharti's counsel Harish Mehta said.
Soon after the hearing, Bharti told reporters that the defamation case was a move by the newspaper group to "belittle her politically" and for issuing a notice during her tenure as Chief Minister to the group on the alleged scam related to inter-corporate deposits of the Madhya Pradesh State Industrial Development Corporation.
"I have full faith in the judiciary. I will make sure that facts about the scam, which had dented state coffers, comes out," she said.
