UN prepares emergency supplies for quake relief

UNICEF said it had emergency supplies ready to be transported to the disaster zone in the centre of Java Island.

The United Nations Children's Fund said on Saturday it was preparing emergency aid for victims of the Indonesian earthquake, which killed at least 2,700 people.

The supplies included nearly 2,000 tents, 9,000 tarpaulins, 4,000 lanterns along with water tanks and hundreds of hygiene kits, the agency said in a statement.

"The UN's Children Agency has deployed staff to Yogyakarta, hard hit by the earthquake, to assess the immediate needs of victims," it said.
