In a statement issued here yesterday, UNLF said the attack was carried out by cadres of the Manipur People's Army (MPA), the armed wing of the UNLF that has been fighting for an independent Manipur for four decades now.

Expressing deep sorrow at four civilians sustaining injuries in the attack, the UNLF said the strike was carried out primarily to "expose the Assam Rifles activities of creating fear psychosis amongst the general public" in the area.

Official sources said while one Assam Rifles personnel sustained injuries in the first attack, four civilians were wounded in the crossfire in the second attack that day at Moreh, 120 km southeast of Imphal.
