The editorial Getting away with murder (August 2) exposed the dangers of living in the crime capital of India. Delhi is slowly going to the dogs and the police and other authorities are conveniently looking the other way. At least the capital of the nation deserves better governance and security.

Keep some decency

After making a hue and cry for days about ‘the mole’ in P.V. Narasimha Rao’s office, the melodrama created by Jaswant Singh has ended in a whisper (No name to disclose, says Jaswant, August 1). The ‘mole’ perhaps existed in his imagination, or else all this was a publicity stunt aimed at boosting the sale of his book. To keep up his pretence to decency, he should resign from Rajya Sabha immediately.

II

Jaswant Singh misrepresented the facts in his controversial book and misled Parliament. He should not have wasted the nation’s time just for the sake of his book’s publicity. The media should also not have given so much attention to this issue.

Protect the right

The Magsaysay award for Arvind Kejriwal for serving the cause of RTI (RTI brain gets Magsaysay, August 1) will come as a slap in the face of the UPA government, particularly the Congress. The government does not have a leg to stand on regarding amendment to the Act. We should all fight to protect this right which, for the first time since Independence, has given a ray of hope that corrupt babus and politicians could be brought to book.

Wrong facts

Abhishek Singhvi’s article The right to not disclose (August 2) is misleading as he has got basic facts wrong. Section 2(e) of the RTI Act pertains to definition of ‘competent authority’ and not ‘information’. A specific mention of file notings in the Act was not necessary since Section 2(j) (i) of the RTI Act already includes the right to inspection of ‘records’, and ‘file’ is defined as part thereof. Could anyone think of notings inside a file as a separate entity?
