Police on Sunday said they have busted a blood donation racket in Gorakhpur. Four people were arrested and 16 youths, who had been held “captive” and were being “forced to donate blood”, were rescued, they said.

The racket, flourishing at Chorpurwa village for the past two years, was busted late on Saturday.
Suspected masterminds Pappu Yadav and R.K. Mishra, a lab technician at the BRD Medical College, managed to flee.
The rescued youths, from outside the state, said they were lured by false job promises. Ramashankar of Bahraich said the gang forced him and others to donate blood thrice a week. In some cases, blood was even taken twice a day.
