An FIR was lodged against the driver of vehicle she was travelling in at the local police station on Monday, said DSP Musafirkhana Vipul Srivastava.

According to the police, the victim and 50 other students of Ramchandra Shukla Smarak Inter College of Amethi's Jamuari had gone to Faizabad to receive laptops from state social welfare minister Awadesh Prasad.

The programme, scheduled to start at 2pm at a local college, was delayed as the minister arrived late and started only at 7pm. The programme ended at 10:30pm and the students were sent home in a vehicle.

After all the girls were dropped, the victim, a resident of Sathin village, was allegedly raped by the driver. He then abandoned her on the road and fled.

The victim managed to walk home and told her parents about the incident.

The girl has been sent to the district hospital for medical examination.

The parents have blamed the organisers for the incident.

HT tried to contact social welfare minister Prasad but could not get a reaction.
