UP polls to be held on schedule: CEC

BRUSHING ASIDE the speculations of early Assembly polls, Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswami said the elections in Uttar Pradesh would be held as per the schedule in May 2007. Talking about voters? list, the CEC said that special software would be used to detect the name of such voters who figures on the lists in two or more constituencies. He said, those attaining the age of 18 on January 1, 2007, would also be enrolled as electorates.

Talking about voters’ list, the CEC said that special software would be used to detect the name of such voters who figures on the lists in two or more constituencies.

He said, those attaining the age of 18 on January 1, 2007, would also be enrolled as electorates. The process for the purpose would be initiated on a warfooting, he added. The preparations for the upgradation of voters’ list throughout the State is in full swing. The voters’ list would be published by the district election officers on October 6, 2006 after removal of mistakes.

Talking to mediapersons in the Conference Hall of the Divisional Commissioner’s office here on today, the Election Commissioner said after the publication of voters’ list, name of fresh electorates would be included on the list through the process of filling up Form-6. All those electorates who had died or left their constituencies, their names would be removed from the voters’ list.

He added that the process for the appointment of booth level officers is in full swing. Fresh booths with number of 1500 electorates would be set up in polling centres in the State. Focussing further preparations of the Commission in the wake of Assembly polls in UP, Gopalaswami said that district election officers have been directed throughout the State in UP to select one assembly in each district for the preparation of voters’ list with photographs on an experimental basis.

For the purpose, 14 such constituencies including South Assembly segment in Varanasi and Ghosi in Mau have been selected in four divisions of Eastern UP — Varanasi, Azamgarh, Basti and Gorakhpur. The booth level officers would be keeping photo bound voter lists of electorates during polling. In future, voters’ list of remaining constituencies would also be dealt with the same process.
