BARRING AN incident where a mob attacked a youth, the situation was more or less peaceful in the areas that witnessed communal violence on Friday.

There was a tense moment at around 10.30 a.m. on Saturday when a youth from Wazirganj reached Kaiserbagh to visit a doctor. Protesters from a rival group, who were staging a demonstration there, asked him to reveal his name and address. When he did so, they pounced on him, stopping only when the police got there. A case has been registered and the youth hospitalised. Apart from this, some shops were ransacked at City Station in Wazirganj.

Aminabad and Maulviganj saw an undeclared curfew following the deployment of paramilitary forces. Police officials and PAC personnel were seen patrolling the empty streets. The markets stayed closed. The bodies of the four victims of Friday's violence were cremated later in the day.

Meanwhile, the state government set up a high-level inquiry into the clashes. Principal secretary (home) Alok Sinha said the two-member administrative committee would be headed by agriculture production commissioner Naveen Chand Bajpai and include PAC DG Bua Singh. The duo has been asked to submit its report in two days' time.

Sinha said 20 companies of PAC and four companies of RAF have been deployed. The state government has announced Rs 5 lakh in ex-gratia relief to the next of kin of the dead.
