INDIA’S UNIQUE water sports institution National Sailing School (NSS) is being opened at the Upper Lake water sports centre from tomorrow. The day also marks one year of the centre.
Yachting Association of India (YAI) honourary secretary Captain Monti Khanna was so impressed by the lake that he remarked there wasn’t a better site for water sports in India.
The YAI is planning National Sailing Schools in Chandigarh, Goa and Chennai too but Bhopal would remain the role model, he told Hindustan Times.
He was on a day’s visit to inspect preparations for the National Sailing School (NSS) being set up by Sports and Youth Welfare Department.
Khanna said the Upper Lake had huge potential for water sports activities and the YAI would provide all requisite assistance in popularising sailing at the centre. He also praised the State Government for necessary help in setting up the sailing school.
Emphasising the need to popularise water sports in Madhya Pradesh, Khanna said he had great expectations from this centre. The State Government had to make specific programmes to attract school children for sailing and he was confident that membership of the centre would be full in every session, he averred.
On the objective of the NSS he said it would prepare players for international sailing championships and others.
Asian sailing meet in September
KHANNA SAID the South East Asian Sailing Championship would be organised at Upper Lake in September this year. Teams of India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka will be participating in the championship, he added.
