US body names NRI as clinician of the year

Amita Patel, an NRI doctor, has been named as 'Clinician of the Year 2005' by the American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry.
Patel, a psychiatrist in private practice in Dayton, Ohio, will receive her award at AAGP's 18th annual meeting in San Diego on March 3.
"We are grateful to Amita Patel for her vision and contributions to clinical psychiatry," said Anand Kumar, MD, AAGP president. "Our association recognizes Dr. Patel for her brilliance as a clinician and scientist, for her leadership, for her originality and, just as important for her compassion for her patients".
Dr. Patel, who is also an Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Wright State University School of Medicine, was selected by the AAGP's Clinical Practice Committee for her "persistent efforts to advance standards of care for all elders and for ardently encouraging her fellow practitioners to appreciate the need to provide compassion, commitment and education to all patients."
"I was pleasantly surprised and humbled by this prestigious award," Dr. Patel said.
"This award has been a culmination of a long journey from my medical school in Bombay to my training in psychiatry at the University of Cincinnati and private practice in Dayton," said Patel, who is also currently serving as Director of the Psychiatric Centre at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton.
AAGP will also recognize three other psychiatrists and one television producer who has offered exemplary coverage of aging issues.
