Almost all the shops selling greeting cards, flowers and gifts have been colourfully decorated to lure the customers.
Attractive items like oversized teddy bears carrying slogans of love and cards carrying messages ranging from the sentimental to the suggestive are being prominently displayed in the shop windows.
Hotels and restaurants too have been given a face-lift in anticipation of brisk business and also to ensure a safer-dating place for the love birds on the occasion of Valentine’s Day.“Valentine’s Day has gained popularity since the past few years in this holy city of Varanasi.
The participation of youths, students and teenagers has been increasing persistently”, said a young man, Shailendra Ojha.
Some of the enthusiasts and teenagers apprehend a threat from the self-styled cultural cops of Shiv Sena and Kranti Shiv Sena to spoil their celebrations.
The volunteers of Shiv Sena are of the view that the culture of Valentine’s Day was imported from western countries and was polluting the Indian culture. They said that they were hell-bent on weeding out this western influence from the holy city of Kashi.
The activists of -Shiv Sena took out a warning procession from Orderly Bazar area on Monday and after passing through Lahuraveer, Chetganj, Gaudaulia and Bhelupur, it ended at Luxa.
Divisional chief of Shiv Sena Ajay Chaubey strongly criticised the celebration of Valentine’s Day and urged the people to keep away from the celebration.
The local Shiv Sena has formed different groups for continuous monitoring the dating places, restaurants, ghats and other tourist spots to check the trend of Valentine’s Day celebration on Tuesday.
