Describing it as a "senseless act of violence", Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday night expressed deep shock and anguish over the bomb blasts in Varanasi.

Sonia has appealed for maintaining social harmony and peace.

Sonia, who is also UPA Chairperson, said in a message "at this moment while all efforts are being made to identify those behind this dastardly deed, we must do our utmost to maintain social harmony and peace".

Gandhi, who is in touch with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Home Minister Shivraj Patil, said the blasts were a "senseless act of violence" directed at innocent citizens of the country.

"My feelings are with the families who have lost their near and dear ones in this tragedy", she added.
