After the defeat to West Indies in the Natwest series on Sunday, Vaughan found the following day that his wallet containing more than 1,000 pounds and a Brian Lara autographed match ticket of the historic Antigua Test was missing alongwith a valuable watch.

Vaughan's team-mate Darren Gough also got the shock of his life when he found that almost 300 pounds and as many as 17 credit cards were missing from the dressing room on returning from the practice nets in Durham's Riverside ground in Chester-le-Street.

If a cricket lover, the thief would love the loot from Vaughan's wallet more. The England captain had treasured the match ticket of the Antigua Test during which Lara had broken the 400-run barrier. Though there were many other valuables in the dressing room, those were left untouched.

According to a report in The Daily Telegraph, the area around the dressing room was unguarded at the time of the walk-in theft and the room was also not locked. However, the thief was caught on the circuit TV tapes.

"The tape shows the bloke having a quick look around before spending three minutes in the dressing room. He was careful not to touch the hand rails of the stairs and leave footprints and he took the long, not the short way out," Vaughan said.

The England captain also felt that the thief knew the layout of the ground. "It is a maze finding your way to the dressing room. We always get lost," he said.
